Bus Stop Dive Resort | An Affordable Dive Site Near Metro Manila

The dive resort is called the “bus stop” as a metaphor for the large pelagics that do their stopover in the area including whales, mantas and large trevally for their regular cleaning.

The dive area is very exciting as it has several interesting area and features. It initially has several huge tributaries from the shallow area that leads to the reef and includes several areas of sandy bottoms. The area also showcases a number of interesting features that comprises of a cavern where a cross was placed on top of the exit and just at the bottom to the right is a statue of the Virgin Mary. The reef also boast of giant clams and generally the area is incredibly teeming with Parrot Fish, Midnight Snappers, Eels, Napoleon Fishes and Groupers.

The resort offers several interesting activities for divers and equally to the extreme adventurers including laid-back tourist. It offers guest the option for scuba diving, hiking and trekking, mountain biking and camping in the forest area. There are several gust package beginning with a day tour and as well as for overnight accommodation.

Bus Stop Dive Resort- as a Marine Sanctuary and Cleaning Station

In 1994, through the efforts of stakeholders, they were able to establish and declare the area as a marine sanctuary. Following that, in 1996, two years after local initiatives and in partnership with the Ocean Heritage Foundation, they have seeded the first batch of giant clams.

In previous years, Bus Stop Dive site is known as a cleaning station where it is really like a bathroom for aquatic animals. Large pelagics do not have the ability to clean themselves like most land animals, including humans. To rid themselves of parasites, bacteria and dead skin many marine animals depend on so-called cleaner shrimps or cleaner fish.

Especially after an injury or if there is a skin infection the cleaning is important to facilitate the healing process. When staying at one of these stations for a while it is possible to observe that injured fish hang around much longer. Healthy animals will visit cleaning stations to avoid getting any infections caused by parasites or bacteria.

When observing pelagics at cleaning stations one should avoid swimming over the stations so as not to disturb the animals. They might only come back after all the divers have disappeared. At smaller stations the cleaner fish sometimes follow the animal to be cleaned for a short distance and the animal will return quicker to the station after the divers have left.

The Bus Stop - Balite trail

It exhibits a different side of San Luis, Batangas and shows you a scenic view which a lot of visitors don't see.  At roughly 3.7kms, the trail boasts of rolling hills and will start from the Bus Stop Dive Resort with a beautiful incline to warm you up.  You will be greeted with tall bamboos lining the trail.  Once at the top, the hills will give you a sneak peak of Balayan Bay, Anilao and Caban Island.  Moving further down the trail, you will cross a small stream which the locals use for laundry.  Another clearing halfway through the trail will give you a view of Ligpo Island and the bay.  The trail also boasts of big trees which have been untouched by lumberjacks and deforestration.  You will end the trail at Barangay Locloc where the grotto of Jesus Christ can be seen.  Climbing the grotto will give you a 360 degree view of Batangas from Anilao, Bauan, Cuenca, Taal, Calaca, Balayan Bayand and the islands of Tingloy, Caban and Sombrero.

Be aware that there are some narrow sections of the trail and a few thorny plants which may scrape your skin.  Always exercise caution by not exceeding your physical capabilities and do bring water and trail food.  Please do your share in maintaining the cleanliness of the trail by packing your trash and taking them with you.

Happy climbs!
