Bahay ay Kawayan, Panggatong ay Lawaan

This poem is inspired by the common day to day lives of the people of San Miguel, Surigao del Sur. The people managed to save the day with the help of these "unknown" trees that once flourished in the vast field of  Philippine virgin forest but now they are now dwindling in numbers. Most of us don't even know that these trees exist  and when asked to give a name of a tree, the most common answer will be acacia and narra. These trees mentioned in the poem are almost dead in the consciousness of most Filipino people .Even the Philippine President doesn't know it ! I swear!

  2. hahaha .. thanks JM Feli, dont worry someone already volunteered to translate it into english for the benefit of non-Filipino speaker ..it was really difficult to construct one specially you have a target subject like for this case I used native trees and got no substitute words for those ..... sure will do follow you too :)

  3. I swear I never heard of many of the trees you mentioned in your poem.

  4. Too bad that the conservation of these trees is no longer was never a priority. Your poem should be taught in schools for younger generation to appreciate this tree and increase its awareness. Pwede siguro sa Sibika at Kultura.

  7. I do not know some of the names of the trees mentioned, but this poem reveals how we had taken for granted our forest. We are blessed with vast lands with trees that was already there even before our great grandparents were born. Sadly there are those who just cut them easily not thinking of the consequence of his actions. I hope someone if not the LGU will stop deforestation that are happening in our country before it's too late =)

  9. Ang pambansang puno -- ang Narra. Sad to know that one of the symbols of the Philippines has truly dwindled in number. With the amount of beneficial things that you could do with, it's saddening to know that what has been taken aren't even replaced. :(

  11. nice poem. I've never seen a lawaan tree but I know its identification and wood classification. The wood's hardiness can be compared to that of Narra, Yakal or Apitong. Some of the trees mentioned in the poem like anangilan and Bagtikan, bago lang sa pandining ko.

  14. Funny thing is that there's this bahay kubo maker in edsa that sells it for P80,000. Makes me think about whether I should just make one myself.

  17. I can just imagine the life that depicts your poem.

  20. Aanhin pa nga ba ang magarang tahanan
    Pagkaing masasarap sa hapag-kainan
    Magagarang damit at mamahaling kagamitan...
Kung ang pamilya'y salat sa kaligayahan??

    NakakaANTIG ang tulang ito!

  21. Napaka-simple talaga ng buhay sa probinsya. Sometimes it's good to go to places like this just to escape the "chaos" here in the city. Very nice poem you have! :)
